Author's alchemy. The special ingredient in creating an original book. The first draft printed out (thank you brother Billy) and wrapped up firmly in a shiny silver container and put into a dark place to grow and transform and ferment. I learned this trick from the Master Stephen King in his book On Writing. When the book comes out again in two more weeks time, it arrives fresh to the eyes and will have magically developed into a new creation. I do not touch it for those weeks, just allow it to grow in the dark like a rare bloom. Meantime, I can get on with research including walking landmarks and streets of London to ensure that references I have made in the new volume are still as I remember. Or I can update. I love this whole process and feel energised and excited. Off to do what we authors call work, research.. explore and make new discoveries. Author's Alchemy. MAGIC. Now sit back and wait.........

A lovely summer day in London - tomorrow I release my book from its secret place where it has been percolating and transforming - and hopefully turning into a bestseller! Author's Alchemy At Work.
Its an exciting prospect. to revisit the book as a new reader - with pencil in hand to make corrections, I will settle in a comfy chair and read the draft without interruption - phones off! Photo below was taken in the mirrored ceiling, glass bottomed Selfie Gallery at Tower Bridge, way above the River Thames. The scene of a dramatic confrontation in my forthcoming book. |
